HAZARD AND HOW IT AFFECTS YOU

HAZARD AND HOW IT AFFECTS YOU.

Hello friend, I want to first of all congratulate you on your successful entry into February.
We will be going through something that is very relevant to your work and even your surrounding.

WHAT IS A HAZARD?
This is anything that has the potential of causing human injury or illness.
It could be an object say a knife or scissors, stapler for instance. It could also be
the state of mind of a worker if he is being distracted while at work and not giving his or her best
on the job or an unsafe condition that has been put in place by someone.
Another example is say for instance, you spill oil while working in the kitchen and because you are in a hurry, you leave it and you don't clean it up. Anybody that enters into that environment could slip and fall down and sustain some injury.  It is very important for you to be able to identify potential hazards in your surroundings especially where you work because that is where you spend most of your time.

FIVE HAZARD CATEGORIES.

According to Steven Geigle, there are five categories in which workplace hazards can be grouped into. The acronym is MEEPS for short, they are as follows:
(1) Materials: These include liquid materials( be it an acid such as Hydrochloric Acid ,a base such as Sodium Hydroxide and solvents such as Benzene that can be harmful if they come in contact with the skin or if inhaled.

(2) EQUIPMENT: These are tools, devices and machinery that can cause bodily harm if handled by a worker who is not competent to operate such an equipment.e.g A forklift truck, a conveyor belt in a factory etc.

(3) ENVIRONMENT:  Are there locations in your work environment that expereience extreme cold, heat? Do you have floors that are slippery or are usually wet and dusty. Workstations that the height is short compared to the people working there or dim and there is not enough light?

(4) PEOPLE: If a worker usually takes short cut in his or her job task in the quest to meet target, he or she might be working unsafely and exposing co-workers to danger.

(5) SYSTEM: If there is poor supervision of workers while they are working, they might be engaging in unsafe work practices. Flawed plans, programs, processes and procedures are system weaknesses account for inadequate safety management systems. These factors are the root causes of incidents and illnesses in the workplace.
It will good for you to call on a safety expert or consultant to help you conduct a risk assssment of your workplace or home.
Till i come your way again, do have a safe weekend.
