WORKING SAFELY IN THE KITCHEN

WORKING SAFELY IN THE KITCHEN

We are still in the festive season and we know that a lot of cooking or work is done in the kitchen  mostly in this period of the year. It is so easy to assume that rarely will accidents occur inside the kitchen but we need to be safety conscious while we prepare Fried rice or Jollof rice or fry or roast chicken or turkey.

SAFETY TIPS THAT WILL ENSURE YOU & YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS WORK SAFELY IN THE KITCHEN.

MAINTAIN GOOD HOUSEKEEPING.
We say in safety that house keeping entails a lot of things. It involves keeping your work area clean and tidy, neatly arranging your worktools in an orderly manner.                                                                                 So lets apply this to the kitchen. All forms of waste generated must be disposed inside a waste bin, nothing should be left on the floor. A yam peel, cabbage, banana peel or plantain peel if unknowingly stepped on can result in slips and falls. In the kitchen drawer, chopping knives should be separated from cutleries. This is to avoid a cut in the finger while attempting to pick a sharp knife from the drawer.

ENSURE THAT WATER, OIL SPILLS ARE CLEANED UP IMMEDIATELY.

This usually happens when the cook in the kitchen wants to fry meat, fish or chicken. Any oil that is spilled on the ground ought to be mopped dry on time. It is preferable that soap be used for washing the affected area before mopping it up with a mopping stick or a dry cloth. It is not a funny sight when someone slips and falls down due to a slippery floor. This can also happen when water spills on the floor and is left uncleaned.

DON’T LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED TO IN THE KITCHEN.
Children are overly curious and inquisitive beings. This little people find the kitchen to be a fun place to visit and play around in. It is thus very important for you as a parent or guardian to keep your eyes open while children step into the kitchen. They will require less supervision when they are reaching nine, ten, eleven years old. Younger children most times want to act like an adult and will tend to want to pick up a knife to play with. They might want to take a spoon or fork from the locations where these are kept in order to use the spoon of fork to themselves. Are these cutleries separated from sharp knives inside the kitchen drawer.

COOKING POTS SHOULD ALWAYS BE COVERED.
Always ensure that while cooking, cooking pots are fully covered to prevent splashing of steam, hot water, hot soup on any part of the skin. It can be very painful if any of this were to happen.  It could   leave a scar on the victim. We will continue in another time. So until I come your way again. This is Goke Akingbade ( your Safety Guide) saying Be safe. Wishing you God’s Best in the New Year.
