THE RELEVANCE OF SAFETY EDUCATION.

According to John F. Rekes, education is a process through which learners gain new understanding, acquire new skills , and/or change their attitudes.
By the way, my name is Goke Akingbade, and I am a safety professional.
My main point of reference in this post will be on safety education.
Safety education informs, persuades and motivates the learner or student.
Employees in the workplace need to know why they ought to engage in safe work procedures.                                                                                                                                                            The most important goal in safety education is to pass across the information about the relevance of occupational safety.
We become educated or instructed in safety in numerous ways:
 (1) Formal classroom instruction:- this is the kind of instruction derived from attending a seminar or taking a course.
 (2) Personal experience outside the clasroom:- this is where real life education occurs.
 (3) On-the-Job training:- this is the best approach for gaining new skills.
What we see with our eyes and hear with our ears contribute alot to our education.
What we see and hear in the external environment automatically educates internally, this  education shapes our thinking. Safety education explains the consequences that people are exposed to  when they decide to comply with safety rules or choose not to abide by such rules.
According to Steven Geigle, there are two types of consequences ( Natural consequences and System consequences).
Natural consequences are those that naturally occur as a result of what a worker or organization does. (a) They result in some kind of physical or psychological hurt or health to a worker.                        For example, Sam enters into a construction site without putting on a hard hat, and a plank falls from height and lands on his head.  Another example is when a factory worker that suffers a strain due to improper lifting techniques.
(b) Natural consequences also affect an organization.                                                                       ABC Construction company ignore safety programs and accident costs naturally increase.                    CDE Construction company ensure that employees have proper safety training and consequently they naturally experience very few injuries. Workers ought to constantly be educated on the natural consequences of their personal choices and behaviour. Their chioces and behaviour help them to understand how their failure to apply safe procedues will result in injuries and illnesses.
I hope I have been able to help you see the importance of safety education. The next discuss will be on System consequences, how it impacts people and organizations.
